Apps to the Public Cloud: Which & Why?

9/18/2019

Strategy (09/18/19)More business leaders stopped talking about moving enterprise applications to the public cloud and actually took the plunge. In one 2019 cloud-computing survey of more than 700 IT professionals, 31% called assessing the viability of public cloud a ‘top priority.’

Perhaps it’s the allure of cloud’s ‘pay-as-you-go’ model, or the promise of lower infrastructure costs and higher utilization rates. Whatever the motivation, spending on public cloud solutions is outpacing private cloud by more than 300%.

At some point, companies planning a cloud migration must decide which applications are most suitable to move. Though there are always exceptions, putting core or mission-critical apps up in the ether is often avoided.

Still, as CIO.com reminds, there are many applications which, regardless of your business, can be confidently migrated to the public cloud.

1)    Websites. The general nature of product and company information make websites a good fit for the public cloud. Plus, the provider’s security practices may be more than adequate for public-facing content.

2)    Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus. Both services can be comfortably placed in the public cloud, says CIO.com, as many companies have.

3)    Human Resources. Because they are used infrequently, compared with mission-critical apps, recruitment, benefits administration and other HR functions are solid options for the public cloud.

Others, especially for larger organizations, include development and testing, training servers and one-off Big Data projects. Uncovering the what, why and how of cloud migration is seldom cut and dried.
