While you should first discuss any prospective cloud solution with a managed services provider, certain advantages continue to make ‘as-a-service’ offerings attractive to SMBs. Most, for example, have heard of the flexibility, security and other potential benefits of migrating to the cloud. Less well known however, may be the actual types of cloud computing and/or features that draw leaders’ interest, for example:
1) SaaS (software). This service puts sophisticated, office productivity tools economically within SMBs’ reach. It offers ‘pay-as-you-go’ economy, and admins aren’t burdened with managing or manually updating applications working anywhere on any device.
2) IaaS (infrastructure). Technical-services companies like this choice because it reduces hardware and data-center expenditures. Typical IaaS options include servers, backup, networking, security, and email hosting.
3) DRaaS (disaster recovery). Immediate recovery and more secure backups/data restores make this a popular option, along with the ability to customize vendors’ scope of data recovery.
Tip: work with your managed services provider to clarify future business goals, as well as specific ‘must-haves’ from a cloud-provider SLA (service-level agreement).
